Culverts and bridges impair flooding by the tides
In hundreds of places along the Gulf of Maine's coast, culverts, bridges, and other structures constrain the flow of tides into salt marshes and other tidal habitats. These tidal restrictions cause major changes in the ecosystem and affect many species of birds, fish, and invertebrates. Efforts to restore coastal habitats often focus on removing or modifying tidal restrictions. This Web page provides information about tidal restriction sites in order to enable planning and prioritization of habitat restoration projects. The Tidal Restrictions Atlas presently has data for Maine only (142 tidal restrictions), but data for Massachusetts, New Brunswick, New Hampshire, and Nova Scotia will be added based on availability.
